What are the new rules in the UK because of the Coronavirus

The UK implemented a new rule stating that anyone entering the country has to mandatorily follow a two week quarantine period, which was a little difficult to execute since more than 200 travel companies asked for it to be scrapped with some MPs also voiced similar concerns. The Home Secretary, Priti Patel, however, took a hard stand, stating that the move was in the interest of protecting public health, now that imported coronavirus cases ”pose a more significant threat”.

What are the quarantine rules implemented in the UK?

Passengers, including UK nationals, arriving by plane, ferry or train have to provide an address to

self-isolate for 14 days. People failing to self isolate for 14 days could find themselves paying a

fine of £1000. Furthermore, there are rules to follow if they are planning surprise visits and other

small trips. Travellers can be fined £100 for failing to fill in a form with these details. Additionally, if

they do not have an address or haven’t booked accommodation, the Government will assist in

finding something relevant, at the traveller’s expense.

Passengers will be forced to drive their vehicle to their destination and cannot use public

transport or taxis. Furthermore, they cannot go to work, school, public areas, or have visitors

except for essential support.

Additionally, they are not allowed to leave their premises for any activity where they can get

assistance from someone else. Employers should account for quarantine rules when dealing with

future working arrangements before travelling internationally.

Are there any places exempt from quarantine, post-arrival?

Anyone arriving from the Common Travel Area (CTA) including the Republic of Ireland, the

Channel Islands, or the Isle of Man does not have to enter and quarantine. However, people

cannot get passed the mandatory self-isolation rule by choosing to travel through these locations

on their way into the UK. Travellers from these places will only be exempt from quarantine if they

stayed in the CTA for at least 14 days.

The Government is working on creating some form of ”international travel corridors” and opening

routes between the UK and countries having few infections and strong healthcare systems. They

are looking to reduce travel process time, by working on some form of improved quarantine rules

for travellers travelling around the corridor.

Additionally, the government is advising against non-essential travel, without having a fixed date

for when quarantine will end. They have stated that these rules will be reviewed by the end of

June, three weeks after their introduction, to see if they are ”effective and necessary”.

Are there any people who are exempt from quarantine?

There are a couple of groups that might be able to sit out the quarantine process:

• Road haulage and freight workers
• Medical and healthcare professionals
• Individuals coming in for pre-arranged medical treatment
• Passengers in transit not passing border control
• Seasonal agricultural workers
• UK residents who ordinarily travel overseas at least once a week for work

It is important to note that a large part of the planet is under lockdown so travellers might have to

quarantine when entering most countries around the world, only if those countries have opener

their borders for international travel.
